University - Accounting Professor

A university accounting professor enjoys the challenge of working with accounting students and preparing them to do well in graduate school and for professional careers in public accounting, private corporate accounting or government accounting. Along with teaching, many accounting professors serve on university committees. Accounting professors spend the majority of their time teaching. They often instruct three or four courses per semester, with some accounting professors also instructing a summer school course. He or she often authors several articles per year for professional journals along with preparing annual tax monographs.
Accounting professors often spend a small part of his or her time providing needed community service along with serving on university and professional committees. Accounting professors require good organizational skills as there are often many activities going on at once. Remaining current in numerous accounting areas can be a challenge for an accounting professor. Some of the many aspects of the job that make it very rewarding is the never-ending intellectual stimulation, interacting and working with colleagues, teaching, contributing to their knowledge and working with young adults and the overall, unique campus environment.
They expect job prospects for university professors to grow fast and remain favorable over the next many years. Increasing enrollments and population growth, along with people realizing the importance of education requires universities to increase their staff. There will also be job openings to replace baby boomers and other professors retiring over the next ten years. Teaching students is definitely the most rewarding part of being an accounting professor.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with faculty members, department heads and mangers to coordinate services to students and to become familiar with all university policies as they are change.
- Participating on various committees and boards within the university as required.
- Overseeing special programs such as tax preparation assistance for low income families or other community based services.
- Lecturing to students, keeping office hours to address problems or complications or otherwise supporting student learning.
- Preparing required documentation for grading and reporting on student progress.
- Attending seminars and workshops to enhance understanding of new or changed accounting practices or tax laws.
