University - Archeology Professor
An archeologist reveals historical facts by uncovering material remains and then conducting scientific studies on them. They study prehistoric people and their cultures through recovery and analyzing the material and human remains and documentation. For people that have an intense or sharp curiosity and find solving mysteries exciting, are curious about people who lived thousands of years ago and how they lived, archaeology is very rewarding. An archeologist often publishes his or her findings in books, professional journals or electronic media. They keep up on the latest archeology developments through current literature, professional conferences and discussions with colleagues.
An archeology professor prepares and gives lectures to his or her students on topics such as urban anthropology, the various research methods, culture and language and often initiates, shares knowledge and moderates the classroom discussions. An archeology professor prepares the course of study, materials, handouts and homework assignments and then assigns or administers and grades their examinations.
An archeologist needs to be in good physical shape, as locating sites often requires walking long distances and then digging, often under rugged conditions and heat. They need good critical and creative thinking skills using reasoning and logic, to approach problems or solve them and create new ideas and systems. Watching students become engrossed in archeology and increasing their understanding of the differences in cultures is very rewarding. They expect the employment of archeology professors and other teachers to continue to grow quickly through 2010. There will also be job vacancies due to archeology professors retiring over the next few years.
Common work activities include:
