Career counselors or internship coordinators help their students by providing them with assistance and information on building their resume, interview assistance, career information and options and help searching for co-ops, internships or jobs. A career counselor helps students tailor their course program or selection. Most career counselors spend the majority of their time advising students and working with them on successful ways to gain experience in the student's related field. On a daily basis, the counselor communicates with employers interested in having interns work for them. The success of a universities student graduates sometimes influences new students looking for a university to attend.
A career counselor presents numerous workshops annually, which provide their students with career-related literature and information. Some counselors also plan and coordinate several events, such as freshmen career events or internship events. A career counselor uses computer applications for internship/job database and alumni networking on the web, so computer skills are important. There is some traveling, as they go to employer sites and conferences. A career counselor's job offers endless variety and a bridge into the corporate and academic world.
Although a career counselor works long hours, especially at peak periods, they feel rewarded by helping students determine their career goals and watching their students turning these goals into a reality. Career counselors need to possess patience, have good communication and social skills, broad general knowledge, be flexible yet logical and methodical and have a sense of humor when dealing with their students.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with students to discuss career options based on aptitude tests, strength assessments and other diagnostic measures.
- Outlining the training requirements for various career choices, discussing costs and time expectations, as well as offering suggestion for alternative careers.
- Organizing and planning for seminars and workshops that the counselor may provide on career planning or career development.
- Hosting and planning job fairs, employment exhibitions and even open houses to allow local businesses to provide information on careers to students.
