University Communications Professor
A university communications professor provides specific training to students in the area of effective communication. This includes the professor constantly researching and learning new techniques in effective teaching methods, communication methods including technological advances, studying human behavior and how it relates to communication as well as understanding the future problems and issues that will affect how people around the world communicate. The communications professor must be able to teach students in a way that prompts and promotes interest in the subject with an emphasis on communication and its role in all aspects of human relationships.
A communications professor in most universities and colleges will be involved in ongoing research projects. These projects may be local, within the specific university, or may be part of a global research project that several professors are working on from around the world. Understanding research design, completing the required observations, tests or experiments as well as entering data into databases, spreadsheets and other document forms is also part of a research professors responsibility. In larger universities the professor may have graduate assistants that must be training in data entry and research completion.
Finally the communication professor must fulfill some requirements of his tenure or teaching contact with the facility. This usually mean participating on committees, working with community groups, or overseeing special programs the university may have. The professor will also, of course, be required to interact with students, mentor those experiencing difficulties, and answer student questions and concerns with regards to course material, grades or other issues.
Common work activities include:
- Developing course material that reflects current trends in teaching and communication research.
- Teaching classes as required, keep office hours for consultations with students, mentor students and work with various students experiencing difficulties.
- Attending and participating on various university staff committees, overseeing special programs or events with the university and working collaboratively with other professors and departments.
- Overseeing graduate students acting as teaching assistants within the course.
- Grading and evaluating student assignments and projects.
- Supporting learning both in the course and outside if the program as it relates to communication.
