University - Librarian

A university librarian organizes, collects and manages a large array of library resources necessary to meet the student's needs. They must select and remain up to date on any new materials or publications such as multi-media CD's, books, newspapers, computer databases, journals, audiocassettes, microfiche, photographs and videos. A university librarian catalogues, organizes, classifies and then indexes their books and materials, along with answering student's enquiries, teaching the students research skills and helping them locate the information.

University librarians use a variety of equipment in their daily work such as computers, books, newspapers, periodicals and government documents. Along with serving on or doing committee work, university librarians manage library personnel which includes hiring, training, scheduling or, if necessary, firing them. A librarian spends the vast majority of their time answering questions, supplying information and teaching. At times, the position of university librarian is stressful, as there are often several activities or projects running at one time, so a librarian should be able to work well under pressure, remain organized and handle stress.

Both teaching and committee work require preparation, people skills, expressing points of view and needs and ideas clearly and a great deal of patience and preparation. To be a great university librarian takes logical and methodical thinking skills, working well under pressure, broad general knowledge, a good memory and excellent computer applications and computer knowledge. Although there is often much competition for jobs in the university and general library field, applicants with enough professional background normally acquire positions rapidly.

Common work activities include:

  • Establishing library budgets and planning purchases and expenditures.
  • Ordering, receiving, unpacking, cataloguing and identifying the items purchased.
  • Hiring, training, supervising and terminating employees that work in the library.
  • Monitoring the media center and coordinating services of the library with the media center consultant.
  • Answering student and faculty questions regarding library materials, completing searches and inter-library request forms for information and document from other libraries.
  • Monitoring, tracking and recording the use of library equipment including books, periodicals, computers, audio-visual equipment and others.
  • Entering all library resources on databases and other computer tracking forms.
