University Administration - President

A university president is the chief executive officer, university leader and spokesperson and committed to the growth and improvement of the university. His or her main role is administrative and leadership of development and growth and participate in scholarly activity, teaching and research. They oversee all university operations, including working with program directors in policies and procedures, program specific issues and budgetary needs. A university president actively participates in not only selecting and hiring senior staff and faculty but also conduct the program directors evaluations. With any student appeals, student misconduct, student dismissal legal issues, the university president makes the final decisions. Once annually, they make a formal State of the University Address to faculty, staff and students.

A university president requires excellent leadership qualities, the ability to function well in a team environment and manage change successfully. It is necessary for the president to possess personal accountability, integrity, consensus building, and have excellent communication skills. This is a very stressful position, so the university president should handle stress and work well under pressure. Over the next few years, using technology effectively, new methods of teaching and financial pressures will continue to need addressing.

The job opportunities and outlook for a university president, along with other college and university administrators, remains very positive and favorable. During economic downturns, most universities often experience economic downturns but because of the increasing enrollment predicted over the next ten years, along with administrators reaching retirement age, their job prospect is extremely favorable.

Common work activities include:

  • Coordinating and overseeing all issues of the operation of the university from the scheduling of classes, student enrollment, faculty, policies and guidelines through to media issues.
  • Meeting with community leaders, serving on community groups and boards to represent the university.
  • Establishing, developing and monitoring the policies used in both academic and business aspects of the university.
  • Preparing media releases in consultation with the public relations department, completing public speaking engagements and representing the university at the nation or state level.
