University Administration - Student Services and Athletics Marketing Manager
The student services and athletics marketing manager of a university works to develop and manage income sources to fund various services for the students and the athletic programs currently occurring at the university. This may include marketing the university logo to be used with local manufacturers, soliciting for corporate or commercial sponsors of the various teams and events or even planning fundraising programs for teams or student services that attract dollar contributions for the community, alumni and other interested parties.
Since contacts and networking are key to good marketing programs a large portion of the marketing manager's day is spent making and enhancing contacts in the community. This may mean publishing reports and outcomes to current contribut0rs, following up on questions or leads from potential contributors or even making routine visits to local companies, agencies and organizations to discuss financial contributions or support of the various programs.
Fundraising development including annual events like sports days, golf tournaments, bringing in professional players or even arranging alumni dinners and gatherings often fall to the student services and athletics marketing manager. The manager often has several staff member that assist in planning, distribution of materials and information and coordinating of fundraising activities. The marketing manager must have above average communication and interpersonal skills, a willingness to work with people both in the community and in the university, as well as a good financial background
Common work activities include:
- Networking and meeting with business managers and owners, community leaders and other influential individuals in the community to attempt to gain sponsorship or financial contributions for the university athletics or student services programs.
- Speaking at various community and business events such as Chamber of Commerce meetings or town hall meetings.
- Developing budgets and setting reasonable fundraising goals.
- Establishing annual or semi-annual fundraising activities and events for the university athletics departments.
- Keeping financial records of contributions, distribution of funds and management of accounts.
- Reporting the use of funds to the contributors and governing bodies of the university as appropriate and requested.
- Completing required financial statements and issuing reports to the financial department of the university for tax purposes.
