Veterinarian Pharmacologist
A veterinarian pharmacologist works with a laboratory or pharmacy to provide pharmacological or drug treatments and therapies to pets, animals and livestock as prescribed by a veterinarian. The veterinarian pharmacologist is often required to complete the laboratory testing of blood, body fluid or tissue samples to help in the diagnosis of the condition. The veterinarian pharmacologist may also work with DNA to determine genetic conditions that may exist within the animal. The veterinarian pharmacologist works as part of the veterinarian's team to help devise an overall treatment plan for the animal that may include short or long term drug treatments or therapies.
Many veterinarian pharmacologists are also actively involved in research in using drug therapies in treating animals. Pain management as well as diabetes control are often components of research involving drug therapies in animals. The veterinarian pharmacologist may be a consultant to several different veterinarians or may work exclusively with one large clinic or animal hospital.
Many veterinarian pharmacologists are also involved in teaching, especially if they have their PhD in pharmacology. Some veterinarian pharmacologists may also work in non-clinical settings for private pharmaceutical companies or other private sector agencies. Some veterinarian pharmacologists may work with government agencies developing policies and regulations regarding the various drug therapies and their use with animals.
Common work activities include:
- Analyzing and comparing blood, body fluid, DNA and tissue samples to help with diagnosis.
- Recommending appropriate short or long-term drug treatment therapies for the treatment of the diagnoses condition.
- Consulting with veterinarians and animal owners to evaluate the prescribed drug therapy and make modifications as required.
- Compounding various medications to create customized treatments based on species, size and prescription dosage.
- Educating both the owners and veterinarians on any possible side effects or physical complications that can arise when using the various medications.
- Monitoring and tracking all medicines dispensed as required by state, local or national regulations.
