University Veterinary Pharmacologist

A veterinary pharmacologist studies drugs, including therapeutics, as connected to veterinary medicine and must hold a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. They play a leading role in pet and livestock healthcare. With a university, a veterinary pharmacologist teaches their veterinary medical student's, classes in the study of drugs called pharmacology, carries out drug related research programs and is the clinical pharmacology service director. They act as consultants and provide information on the use of drug therapy in sick animals to many practicing veterinarians.

One of the many pieces of equipment a veterinary pharmacologist uses is a Tdx machine. This machines measures the drug levels in an animal's blood. A veterinary pharmacologist needs funding for sustaining their research programs so he or she spends a great deal of time and effort writing research proposals and sending them to various research funding agencies, in order to obtain funding money. Universities apply a lot of pressure on veterinary pharmacologist to get the necessary funding, as the research program would end without it.

Some of the many rewards of teaching veterinary pharmacology is, inspiring or making a difference in a student's life, making interesting and important discoveries and helping sick animals, through their work with drug therapy. They collaborate with other pharmacologists nationwide in research projects and meet with veterinarians to discuss drug therapies. They expect employment prospects to remain favorable, due to increasing enrollments and replacing many veterinary pharmacologists that reach retirement age over the next ten years.

Common work activities include:

  • Preparing and presenting information on drugs and drug therapies for animals to students both in lecture and practice experience teaching styles.
  • Keeping current on the numerous new drug therapy treatments for animals that are developed and marketed each year.
  • Using various equipment in the laboratory and teaching students how to properly use the equipment.
  • Coordinating the services of graduate students and teaching assistants in the program.
  • Developing, monitoring and researching various aspects of drug therapies for animals.
  • Publishing results of research, preparing lectures on the research material and presenting to other professionals locally, nationally or even internationally.
