University - Volcanologist
A volcanologist at a university is largely responsible for research, both academically and in the field, about the activities of volcanoes. Since the eruption of a volcano is still very challenging to predict, volcanologists work to try to learn how to detect the earliest possible signs of eruptions as well as how to minimize the effects of eruptions from volcanoes. Early warning and detection can save thousands of lives when volcanoes close to populations erupt.
The university volcanologist works with various computer programs that detect seismic activity, heat changes deep in the earth, as well as image processing and interpretation of images using databases and other programs. In addition to just using the computer for data collection most volcanologists also teach classes to students, geologists, emergency response groups and other interested individuals and use the data from the research in computer demonstrations and visual presentations. Computers software exists that allows the volcanologist to model the volcano and, using various changes in data, make predictions as to dormancy or activity.
Most volcanologists spend a most of their time actually checking on various volcanoes, both active and inactive, around the world. With satellite technology and better telecommunication devices less time is needed in actual travel and more work is completed via information from various remote sources. Volcanologists may be called to various countries in the event of a potential eruption or they may also work with local, state or federal governments to develop safety and evacuation plans or to deal with the crisis of an eruption.
Common work activities include:
- Reviewing satellite images and data provided by remote sensing equipment at various volcanoes around the world.
- Meeting with geologists and other professionals to address issues with regards to predicting and monitoring of active and inactive volcanoes.
- Using various technologies to record, track and monitor areas of the earth with regards to volcano activity.
- Supervise all employees and graduate students working in the department, be involved in hiring, training and firing of employees.
- Prepare and present information on volcanoes to university students, outside agencies, environmental groups, schools and other organizations.
- Participate on local, state or federal committees for emergency response and monitoring of volcano sites.
