City - City Manager

City - City Manager

A city manager oversees all aspects of the actual working of the city. This involves many different aspects such as taking policy as developed by the city committee and government and actually putting it into action in the city. A city manager handles building projects, re-zoning issues, health and safety for citizens, developments and managing the coordination of all city services in an organized and effective way. Most city managers have specific training in organizational and business management as well as experience working on boards, committees and with commissions.

The city manager spends a great deal of time attending various meetings and providing information to committees to allow them to make the appropriate decisions. The city manager may also have to appear at commissions and planning meetings to provide input and information on major and minor changes that the may occur. Since the city manager often understands the ripple effect these decisions can have on the whole area their input is critical in the decision making process.

The city manager cannot possibly oversee all issues and departments even in a small community so they are responsible for appointing or hiring individuals to act as department heads within the infrastructure. The city manager also works closely with the department managers to understand their concerns and issues and to assist the city departments in working together. A city manager must be financially responsible with city funds and must operate the city within the given budget, or make applications for additional funds when required.

Common work activities include:

  • Meeting with various committees, commissions and agencies to determine the appropriate direction for city development.
  • Developing a city budget in consultation with other members of the city government.
  • Overseeing the daily operation of the city by coordination of services through various department managers and supervisors.
  • Meeting with department managers and supervisors to resolve problems or improve services.
  • Reporting to the Mayor or elected officials as required. Preparing news releases to the media or granting interviews.
  • Resolving conflicts and problems between the city and various outside groups and agencies.
