Health Education MIS Manager - County Education Department

A health education MIS manager working for the county education department is responsible for the tracking and monitoring of migrant workers and their access to the education system. This is completed through the development of databases that include all aspects of the services that are provided for migrant workers and the ability of the individuals to access these services through local schools.

The health information MIS manager develops the database and establishes data entry protocol to allow quick access to information about groups of migrant workers or individual families. This information must be entered into the system in a timely and accurate fashion, so the manager is responsible for hiring data entry staff and training them in the correct use of the database. He or she will also allow access to the database by authorized individuals and will set up access protocols, set passwords, and help individuals that are experiencing problems accessing the database. The manager will also develop recall programs that allow users to generate specific data and reports from the database by entering specific parameters and requests.

The MIS manager also works with other systems such as phone requests for information or services, word processing programs, spreadsheets and peripherals such as scanners and online fax. Some decoding and email training may also be required for support staff. The MIS manager presents reports to appropriate groups, speaks at a conferences and professional development days, as well as makes recommendations for improvements to the system to better serve migrant workers in various school communities.

Common work activities include:

  • Researching, gathering data and applying for various state and federal grants for funding to provide services.
  • Establishing database entry protocol, training staff on data entry and other computer software programs.
  • Managing the information that comes into the databases, allowing access and writing programs for information retrieval.
  • Presenting information and findings to various professional groups including state and federal education committees.
  • Assisting with software or hardware issues or problems with the department or outside data entry equipment.
  • Developing a budget for equipment, staff and supplies and working with the budget throughout the year.
