County - Forester

Foresters are responsible for the management of the forester reserves, natural areas, parks and wildlife areas located within the county. The forester works closely with environmental groups, timber companies and other industries to effectively manage the use of timber and forested areas in the community to ensure stability of the environment for wildlife and recreational use while still allowing timber companies to operate. This involves excellent negotiation and communication skills as well as a clear understanding of the management of forests and timber reserves. Foresters have at least a bachelors level education in forestry and some may have masters or even doctorate level degrees.

Foresters monitor the growth and use of forest reserves and areas through several different methods. Aerial photography, satellite imaging and other technologies now largely replace the actual physical counting that used to be used to collect information. Databases and data sheets are now used to keep the information in easy to access forms to allow graphing, charting and accurate predictions of various types of forestry use. This information may also be used in wildlife and resources management, another important aspect of the forester's job. Foresters working for the county also prepare reports to the various committees to keep them informed of forested areas and issues with reforestation or sustaining of resources.

In times of disease infestations, fires or there natural of man-made disasters the foresters act to support other services. They may treat the various trees or plants for disease, fight fires, sand bag against floods or oil or gas leaks or complete any other number of tasks to protect the natural environment.

Common work activities include:

  • Researching the various aspects of forest growth and development in different areas and under various conditions.
  • Monitoring and checking on forestry reserves in the county on a regular basis to ensure there are no problems, infestations or disease problems with the timber, wildlife or waterways.
  • Working with environmental agencies and other government agencies to support the sustainable growth of the forest.
  • Overseeing and monitoring reforestation.
  • Ensuring timber companies are in full compliance with timber regulations.
  • Meeting with groups, government officials or other interested agencies to report on aspects of natural and reforested areas in the county.
