Health Education Support Services Manager - County Education Department

The health education support services manager or administrator working for the county education department focuses on health promotion and disease prevention in the community. They are concerned with improving the welfare and health of the county at large and distribute information regarding heath issues. Along with evaluating county health issues, they educate members on easing or preventing health problems. The health education administrator carries out county outreach programs making the public aware of dangers and chronic problems affecting the county.
The health education administrator hires staff, obtains the necessary equipment, creates budgets and organizes the office, along with fundraising and writing grant proposals or if a heath related event happens, they report on how they believe it could affect the county. He or she dispenses federal supportive programs in the county and several school districts and writes applications for funding. When families need social services or healthcare, they refer the family to the appropriate resources. They work with other social service agencies, federal offices, medical providers, other education institutions and state offices. There is occasional travel, presenting at conferences and teaching involved.
A health education administrator should possess the ability to handle stress, work well under pressure and able to solve problems quickly and accurately. They should have good communication skills; possess patience, be results oriented, have tolerance, be responsive and ethical to concerns of the public and possess great organizational skills. Overall, it is expected that the job outlook for health education support services managers to remain positive over the next six years.
Common work activities include:
- Researching, gathering data and preparing applications for grants from various funding sources including government and private sector.
- Developing yearly and long-term budgets for the department in conjunction with the finance and planning department for the county.
- Purchasing equipment, supplies and inventory based on the budget.
- Hiring, training, supervising and firing staff within the department. This may include providing conflict resolution programs, employee assistance programs or other specialized programs to assist employees in times of crisis.
- Researching and obtaining data that affects the community with regards to health issues.
- Publishing reports, documents and information on the current and possible future health issues within a county or community.
- Making recommendations for improved services and collaborating with other agencies and services to put the recommendations into place.
