County - Transportation Commissioner
The transportation commissioner for the county oversees all aspects of traffic management from new developments and roads through to ensuring that traffic flows through the county at all times in the safest and best possible manner. The transportation commissioner also works on developing public transportation options such as bus, trains, monorails or other forms of mass transit. They are involved in transportation safety issues such as transportation services for the elderly or bicycle safety for children or adults. Transportation commissioners also work with airports, ferry terminals, railways and taxi services.
A large part of the transportation commissioner's role is to manage the funding to the transportation department. In most counties this will be one of the largest budgets and it requires careful consideration as to where to most effectively spend funds to improve all transportation options. The commissioner will survey the community, commission reports and usage records, talk to various state and federal funding sources and make a decision, usually through a commission or committee on how to spend funds. The transportation commissioner will usually present information to local groups, to the media, and also the governing body for the county.
In larger centers a large part of the transportation commissioners role will be to deal with issues regarding congestion and commutes for workers. Often this is a very emotional issue and the commissioner must have very good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills to deal with these individuals. They must be comfortable in public speaking situations and should be calm and professional and not easily upset by negative comments. The transportation commissioner often has a very difficult task in these large, heavy traffic environments.
Common work activities include:
- Attending meetings to represent the transportation department regarding re-zoning, new developments, expansion of the residential areas and other new building in the county.
- Applying for state or federal funding for road improvements, airport additions, or increased bus or handicapped transportation funding.
- Reporting to the media regarding new developments or expansions or improvement to any type of transportation.
- Managing the department of transportation including hiring, training and supervision of staff.
- Managing the transportation department budget and prioritizing expenditures.
