Speechwriter - Federal Government

A speechwriter for the federal government works directly with those individuals in positions of power or authority to provide information to the general population. A speechwriter must be able to explain very complex information in simple, straight forward and informative ways that will make sense to average people, not just those that are already knowledgeable in the field. Generally a speechwriter works for one or a small group of professionals and therefore becomes very knowledgeable in areas or topics that the individuals speak on.
A speechwriter starts by meeting with individuals from the group that has requested the speaker. He or she finds out the important points that the group wants to have addressed during the speech. The speechwriter then researches the topic and interacts directly with the speaker to determine their position on the various topics to be addressed. The speechwriter then composes a speech that includes both the speaker's perspective as well as information from the research to create an informative, original and authentic speech for the professional to present to the group.
The speechwriter will then make revisions based on the speaker's preferences or requests. A good understanding of communication and different communication styles, a strong sense of identity with the speaker as well as a belief in the material that is being written is essential for a good speechwriter. An ability to work on multiple projects at one time as well as stay within strict timelines is also critical for this position.
Common work activities include:
- Meeting with groups and individuals to discover and discuss the topics required to be covered by the speaker.
- Researching current and relevant information on the topic that is in keeping with the opinion of the speaker.
- Writing a speech that is both informative and fits the personality of the speaker as well as meeting the needs of the audience. Entering the speech into a word processing program and producing hard copies for the speaker.
- Revising, editing and modifying speeches as requested.
- Monitoring deadlines, keeping on schedules and soliciting feedback from both the speaker and the audience as to the effectiveness of the speech.
