Employment Services - State Employment Development Department Counselor

State employment development department counselors work to find jobs for people that meet specific requirements for the services. This may be people that are disabled, veterans, women or minorities, victims of a natural disaster, crime or family violence, or otherwise qualified to receive state assistance in seeking employment. The counselors work with the clients both individually and in group settings to provide access to work options that meet the client's needs and skill levels. The counselor also provides references and referrals to other state or federal programs that the individual job seeker may qualify for such as loans for courses, subsidized training or mentoring programs or apprenticeship programs.

The employment counselor helps the individual client to set goals for themselves for education, training and employment. They assist the client in considering alternative and creative choices based on the client's current skills and strengths, and may even help the client to find training options that meet their needs. Monitoring and evaluation of the progress plan or professional development plan is usually part of the services offered by the employment counselor. This helps job seekers stay on track and focused on their goals and specific programs.

The employment counselor at a state employment service works as part of a team of professionals that help individuals in the community. Good interpersonal skills, excellent communication and an ability to work well with both individuals and businesses in the community is required. Teamwork and understanding of clients needs is very important in helping match the job with the prospective employee.

Common work activities include:

  • Meeting and evaluating job seekers that meet the criteria for the state employment services program.
  • Assisting clients in determining their skills and strengths and encouraging them to consider a variety of jobs that highlight these skills.
  • Referring clients to other programs including training, education and financial programs that can be of service.
  • Coordinating the selection of jobs and potential job seekers to ensure a good match for both employers and employees.
  • Monitoring case files and completing follow-ups.
  • Attending staff meetings, community meetings and other business meetings to ensure that information is up-to-date and clients are being served to the best possible level.
  • Entering required data and completing all reporting processes required.
