Emergency Medical And Safety Instructor

An emergency medical and safety instructor provides training or emergency response and treatment of people that have been injured or hurt by accidents or by illness. They do not just training emergency medical technicians (EMT), but rather they train anyone that wishes to learn techniques such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CRP), basic first aide, assisted breathing and other lifesaving techniques. Many professional such as police officers, teachers, daycare workers, volunteers and other social service jobs require employees to be currently trained and certified in first aid.

Emergency medical and safety instructors may either travel to the course or workshop of the participants may come to a central training location. The instructors must be effective, knowledgeable and yet make the training positive and enjoyable for the participants. Most training use a combination of lecture, video and actual hands on experience to learn the first aid techniques discussed. The instructors are usually EMTs, paramedics, nurses or others with medical experience in working in emergency situations. In addition to just having a background in the field most instructors keep all certifications and licenses current and effective even when teaching.

Many emergency medical and safety instructors have their own business and also handle marketing, billing, inventory, supplies, hiring and training as well as booking classes in addition to teaching. Networking and building a strong client base is essential to get the business started. Talking to schools, community organizations and even churches and other organizations is part of the marketing for the training program. Developing a training manual, presenting certificates and answering client questions is also part of the role of an emergency medical and safety instructor.

Common work activities include:

  • Meeting with new clients, outlining the training program and choosing a suitable location.
  • Packing all necessary equipment for the training and arriving prior to the class to set up the area.
  • Teaching the program, answering questions and assisting participants to learn and used the correct emergency medical techniques.
  • Billing and collecting fees for trainings completed.
  • Hiring, training and monitoring other staff including trainers and support staff for the office or classroom area.
