Addiction Treatment Recovery Center Executive Director

An executive director of an addition treatment recovery center oversees the operation of the facility from hiring support staff through to applying for grants from various funding sources. The executive director is the highest employee position within the agency and usually reports directly to the board of directors. The executive director makes most of the decisions for the agency based on the support and agreement of the board of directors. In large agencies there may be several department or unit managers under the executive director whereas in smaller agencies he or she may be the sole manager of the facility.
The executive director sets all aspects of policy from staff hiring, developing policy manuals, training and supervision of staff to remediation or termination of employment. The executive director is usually directly involved in the hiring of staff, especially managers, supervisors and other professionals. The executive director also represents the agency in community issues, liaison with hospitals, rehab centers, chemical abuse centers, parole offices and other referral sources. The executive director will oversee grant management and the fiscal policies of the treatment recovery center.
As the executive director all complaints and issues regarding professional conduct will come to this office. The executive director may investigate any allegations of staff misconduct and then will determine appropriate actions ranging from releasing the patient from the center through to discipline or even termination of the employee if the complaint is upheld. The executive director is also involved in employee recognition and promotions. An executive director should have above average organizational skills, a strong sense of professionalism and an understanding of the addition treatment process.
Common work activities include:
- Hiring, training and supervising of employees with an emphasis on monitoring department managers.
- Ensuring all employees are aware of company policies and procedures through interviews and trainings.
- Changing and revising policies as required.
- Meeting with community and health officials to discuss the services the treatment center can offer.
- Writing grant proposals, managing the budget and dealing with insurance companies if applicable.
- Investigating issues of complaints against staff and other patients and taking the appropriate actions.
