Chief executive is one of the best paying jobs for women, according to Forbes magazine's most recent list. With weekly earnings of $1,553 adding up to yearly earnings of $81,000, one has to wonder why only 24 percent of those in this profession are women. But now that the ladies know where the money is, they might want to know the job responsibilities, work environment, and educational requirements that will score them such a paycheck.
The job of a chief executive isn't an easy one, as they are responsible for directing the operations of various organizations and work hard to ensure to design strategies that enable goals and policies to be met. But they don't do it alone. Chief executives work closely with highly skilled personnel and other top executives to make sure that the company is operating within these goals and policies. Often, the nature of their work depends on the size of the organization they are working for. Executives working for small organizations may be responsible for daily supervisory duties, purchasing materials, quality control, and hiring and training employees. Executives working for large organizations are responsible for the overall direction of the business as well as directing and carrying out strategies for certain departments within the company.
Chief executives who work for large organizations usually have big offices, which may or may not include a nice view, and a sizeable support staff. They work long hours, extending past that of regular business, including evenings and weekends. As they need to oversee operations, they meet frequently with customers, staff, general managers, and other executives. This may require that they travel often visiting international, national, regional, and local offices. Their schedules are busy and quite often include attending meetings and conferences as to oversee business deals, partnerships, and stay current on advances within the industry.
While the education and experience of chief executives vary, many of them hold a bachelor's or master’s degree in business administration, liberal arts, public administration, or a related area. These types of degree programs can include courses in operations management, business policy and strategy, organizational theory, economic development, and environmental science. They also learn through a considerable amount of experience, beginning as lower level managers and working their way up within the company. Companies generally prefer chief executives who have extensive managerial experience and generally fill top executive positions by promoting their own employees.
