Choosing a Career Amidst a Recession
The economic outlook has not made many of us optimistic for the future, especially recent college graduates who have spent four years and thousands of dollars earning a degree which seems utterly useless in a poor economy. However, simply changing your career plan can help you better suited to look for a job in your discipline, even if it is not your “dream job”.
Many large corporations have suffered throughout the recession and continue to be hesitant to hire graduates directly out of college, so it is always risky to spend time looking at these companies. Instead, look to smaller companies that seem more inclined to hire graduates based not on their age, but on their personality and background experience in the field. You may have the most impressive resume in a particular field for a large corporation, but your age will many times prevent them from hiring you over someone twice your age who has twenty years of experience.
It is also worthwhile to look into non-profit organizations, especially if you graduated from a liberal arts school. This educational background is exactly what most non-profits look for when hiring new workers and simply keeping these organizations in mind when choosing a career can go a long way toward settling on a future.
While there are still success stories of young graduates who have “made it big” shortly after their college graduation, these stories are by no means common occurrences and continue to be rare. It is therefore important to find a career that you know you will be able to grow in and still apply your degree to. Choosing a lifelong career may seem to be a daunting task, especially when you were just sitting in classes as your “career” for the past decade, but researching the proper companies and organizations can help go a long way to finding the best career for your degree and your lifestyle.
The recession has impacted all our lives in some way or another, and unfortunately the younger generation has felt these impacts more than anyone else with the difficulties apparent in finding jobs, but the key is to keep looking! Never give up on your career and job search, especially after receiving a profitable degree from a four-year university. There are always opportunities out there, it just takes some students a while to adjust their previous career dream to one that is now more realistic.
