Setting Apart your Career in Control Engineering

Control engineering came about as a branch of mechanical engineering, although control theory itself was studied as part of electrical engineering since electrical circuits were easily explained by using control theory techniques. Over time, these two processes combined to produce industrial applications, many which continue to be used today. Control engineering now involves the modeling of mechanical systems and the development of controllers which help these systems behave in the desired manner.

It continues to remain difficult to classify control engineering into a specific subset of the engineering world, since it still involves the two realms of mechanical and electrical engineering, but control engineering itself has emerged as a new sector in engineering. Since this type of engineering remains largely undefined by the whole of the engineering community, most public schools classify the degree program within classes of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or even aerospace engineering. Other schools even relate it to computer science or chemical engineering. The many overlapping disciplines that make up control engineering may seem to make it difficult to stand out within the field, but instead make it easy to make your own mark in a new subsection.

While control engineering is not a novel theory of engineering, it continues to be a widely debated one due to the many classes and degree programs that can lead to a thorough understanding of the discipline. Recent years have led to many advances within control engineering because of the new technological aspects that computers and computer controllers can have on the degree itself. Control engineering is on the forefront of modernity now more than ever because of its continued reliance on computers and computer science, making it a highly sought-after degree for many large corporations.

Most of us are used to hearing about mechanical engineers or industrial engineers, but we rarely hear about control engineers, making this subsection that much more rare and sought-after. Breaking out in this field means more than simple recognition within the community, but instead means brand-new discoveries and world-wide recognition through much more than the scientific community. Aerospace engineering has long lost its appeal since it became increasingly popular within younger students (and since the space race ended), but a degree program in a genre as obscure as control engineering has helped many students to succeed in a field that has yet to be fully defined.
