Online Degree Programs in Film & Theater

Theatre and film courses will teach students not only to appreciate classic theatre and film productions, but also how to analyze them instead a merely watching them for pleasure. While students should enjoy watching plays and movies, they will also be able to understand how these productions came to be made and how much time and effort it took to bring them to life. Students will learn about playwriting, staging, lighting, and the audiences’ role in any good theatre production. Students will read a few famous plays and will learn about their back stories. This can be very important in order to understand the greater meaning behind the production.

Learning about film will be similar in terms of watching a few classis films and learning about how they were created and how much filmmaking has changed over the years. Students will be able to see exactly how a director and screenwriter create a story for the screen and how a cinematographer is able to film the story as it unfolds. Editing, costuming, and other areas will also be covered in this course.

While theatre and film aim to tell a story, both achieve it in very different ways. When taking a theatre and film class, students will learn more about these differences and how both mediums has managed to captivate audiences for so long. While a theatre production is only alive during the actual production, film can survive a lot longer because it is a taped performance. Theatre productions that are taped do not have the same feeling as when people see an actual performance live. Students will have a greater appreciation for theatre and film after taking a class and learning more about the processes behind both. This will help make watching a theatre production or film more enjoyable and worthwhile.
