Online Degree Programs in Game Art Design

A degree in game art design requires more than just computer programming skills. Students will learn how to use their artistic ability to create characters, environments, and difficult challenges that will be faced during play. Game art designers are in charge of making video games as challenging as possible for players. In the competitive video game market, being able to be creative, take risks, and evaluate what is already available are huge assets.

Game art design degree programs strive to teach students how to use their artistic abilities which include drawing, animation, storytelling, and editing to create video games, become a video game tester, background artist, and more. Students will be taught how to work in a team environment so that a quality product can be created. Games begins with a story. Then characters are formed. Environments for these characters to interact in are brought to life through supporting characters, towns, journeys, acquiring skills, and by interacting with other players. Game art designers are responsible for all of these components that make a great video game experience.

While students do not need to have a background in art, they should have an interest in computers and storytelling. Other skills that will be taught in this program include: how to create storyboards, character development, using computer software, editing, and creating believable environments. After students have learned their craft, they will be able to find employment in the video game industry, corporate media departments, education, and government agencies. A degree in game art design will teach students the importance of storytelling and how they can use their creativity to entertain, inform, and educate other people. This is a career that will continue to grow as the technology becomes more advanced and as the demand for computer animation increases in the next few years.
