Online Degree Programs in Political Science
Political science searches for an understanding of the force in relationships, between the workings of government, the state, groups, and between individuals. It is the study of public and government policy and politics, in the United States and around the globe, with political scientists seeking to explain and describe this political phenomenon. It includes the study of how government and citizens interact; study of government processes, such as how a bill becomes law; study of government officials, such as government workers and elected officials; as well as studying government institutions, such as congress and the presidency. Political scientists attempt to understand fundamental ways in which the laws, power, constitutions, authority and rules, affect people's lives and they focus on both collective and individual human behavior.
Studying power and politics is very old while the political science discipline is comparatively new. Political science, like many social sciences, approach their study in a systematic, rational and objective manner with some political scientists focusing on the effects of certain government policies, while others focus on theoretical and abstract questions. Classes within the subject area address economical, fiscal, public policy, government and cultural issues of politics on all levels from local to international.
Many political science majors seek careers in public service or in government, as consulting analysts, support staffers or elected politicians. Some political science graduates would rather choose a career as faculty members at universities and colleges, analyzing government workings from a distance. Professors, who publish in political journals, often influence current government policies by researching the kind of effect proposed laws could have and by engaging in debates with politicians. Political scientists also encourage their students to research controversial ideas. This could have an effect on future political movements. They also review traditions and formal laws of ruling bodies.
