Online Degree Programs in Labor Relations

Labor relations is an important component of any workplace, large or small. Employees need representation so that they will be treated fairly while at work. Students who want to pursue careers in labor relations will have to learn negotiation skills, listening skills, mediation skills, and communication skills in order to bring labor strikes or disputes to a close as quickly as possible so that workers can return to work and employers can continue to remain profitable.

When labor relations specialists are called into meetings with employers, workers, or union representatives, they may play the role of mediator. In this role, they will coordinate meeting times and locations, and ask both sides questions so that each side has is allowed to state what it wants from the other. Once all demands have been made, labor relation specialists will make recommendations and will offer solutions to the issues that are being disputed. Students will have to learn mediation skills in order to be able to coordinate a mediation session. Learning which questions to ask, sticking to the topic at hand, and giving each side equal time to state their demands are skills that students will learn through role playing exercises in the classroom.

Labor relation specialists can also work for unions or companies and may be called in to represent them during labor disputes. In this role, labor relation specialists will try to get as many demands as possible for their side. Students will learn how to argue effectively, how to gather information, and how to compromise when necessary. In the end, while both sides will not get exactly what they want, they will hopefully walk away with something.

Students who want to take courses in labor relations can find work as mediators, corporate counsel, union representatives, and more. Some people will form their own consulting firms and work with companies and employees to settle their disputes before legal action is taken.
