Online Degree Programs in Supply Chain Management

Supply chain management is the process by which companies acquire from other companies the materials they need to build their products, as well as the manufacturing process, the delivery process, and the return process in case the product is defective. All companies that buy goods from other companies need to have a clear plan for managing their product, cost, and employees in order to satisfy demand and stay in business. Those who can devise plans using software and motivating employees will help companies when they want to expand or improve their current processes.

Students who want to be a part of the supply chain management process within a company usually have a degree in engineering or business management. They may return to school to earn a degree in supply chain management or they may take courses that will cover all of the major components. Students will learn how to create plans, give presentations, and implement plans once they have been approved. Since changes have to be made in phases, students will learn how to break their plans up and implement them one phase at a time.

Having a background in finance or business is useful, but students will have to have an understanding of operations and process improvement in order to communicate with suppliers and engineers about changes that will have to be made. Being able to communicate with suppliers, clients, customers, and other companies that may be buying materials and products from a company, communicating effectively an important step when trying to organize different groups.

Once a plan has been put into place, it will have to be managed by those who understand it. Supply chain management will be needed to conduct business with suppliers, motivate employees, and handle customer complaints and return issues. Students may have to take additional classes in order to understand the entire process.
