Online Degree Programs in Literacy & Reading

Knowing how to read and write is the most important skill a person can learn. It is a necessary part of surviving in the world. Those who cannot read may not be able to hold down a job, be able to find a place to live, or buy food at the grocery store. Learning to read and write begins at an early age. Most children begin to read in the first or second grade. They will also begin to learn how to write at this time. Teaching others how to read and write requires patience, knowledge of learning disabilities, and knowing how to teach these skills to those who learn at different paces.

Students who want to become elementary school teachers will take classes on how to teach children to read and write. These courses will discuss the various ways in which to teach, how to break the classroom into different learning sections, and how to choose the right assignments that will yield the best results. Students will also learn how to choose reading materials that will be the more effective when teaching an entire classroom. Learning to read and write is the foundation of every other skill one will learn in school. Without this basic knowledge, students are more apt to drop out of school when they can because they will not be able to understand what is being taught.

Working with students who have learning disabilities is another area that students who want to teach may be interested in. Becoming a tutor or reading specialist to help children who are dyslexic, or who have vision problems, will require special courses that will train students in teaching reading and writing skills. Children who have learning disabilities can still be taught how to read and write, but they will need special classes and materials to help them.
