Online Degree Programs in Teacher Licensure

There are different types of teacher licensure that people who want to teach can acquire. Early education, elementary education, special education, and secondary education each require that a person earn a four-year degree in order to become eligible for a teaching certificate. Students who only want to teach specific grades can earn licensure for those grades, while others can earn other types that will allow them to teach various grades. It is important to know which grades levels one would like to teach because there are different courses for each type that must be taken.

Some of the courses that students will have to take in order to earn their teaching certificate include: reading and writing, math, history, classroom management, curriculum design, child psychology, teaching pedagogy, and interpersonal communications. Depending on which subjects students want to teach, they will also have to take the appropriate courses while earning their degree. Teaching in a classroom for a few weeks is also required before students will be able to graduate. This is to ensure that they will be ready to handle a classroom situation in the grade level they are earning their licensure.

Teaching different grade levels can be difficult, so most people choose which grade level they would like to specialize in. While most new teachers will have to take substitute teaching positions until they find a full-time position, teachers are most comfortable teaching in the subjects that they have their licensure in. For those who want to work in administration, a dual licensure may be needed in order to work with students in different grade levels. Depending on what the students goals are in their career, they should consider earning a dual licensure so that they will be prepared for what lies ahead. This could also lead to other job opportunities that may not be available to those who can only teach certain grade levels.
