Civil engineering encompasses many different types of engineering including structural engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, and transportation engineering. These jobs are very important to the survival of cities and towns. They promote growth while maintaining what already exists. Working with contractors, design teams, and the government requires a person to have excellent communication skills, problem solving skills, and diplomatic skills. For those who want to work for environmental agencies, these skills are still required, but the main focus will be how to keep water, soil, and other natural elements safe during the construction of these structures.
Transportation is a very important component to any society. Civil engineering students who want to pursue careers as transportation engineers will be able to work for government agencies and private contractors in the designing of highways, roads, airports, railway stations and track lines, and other transportation needs. This is a career that will require a person to travel often and meet with different types of people in order to see a project through to completion.
