Online Degree Programs in Clinical Laboratory Sciences
Clinical laboratory science degrees are needed to work in hospital labs, clinics, and doctor’s officers. Those who want to work in a laboratory analyzing blood, urine, and other samples from patients help to determine if a person is suffering from an illness or other medical issue. Students will need to complete the following courses: chemistry, microbiology, computer science, biology, and blood analysis. Students will also have to learn how to use various lab equipment in order to conduct their tests. As science and technology continue to change, those who work in labs will have to learn how to use them also.
Students who enjoy science, finding out what samples have to say about another person’s health, and an attention to detail are all needed in order to succeed in any lab environment. Lab courses and group projects will have to be completed before students will be awarded their degree. Those who want to run a lab will also have to take courses in clinical laboratory management.
Having computer science skills are also important when working in a lab. Using spreadsheets and other computer programs, lab technicians will enter data, maintain patient records, and compare samples. Technicians will also track different samples if a patient needs to have samples tested every few months. This is how cancerous tumors are tracked. Once the tumors have gotten too big, surgery may be necessary. Lab technicians will continue looking at blood samples to determine if the cancer has returned. This is a very important job that can prolong people’s lives if diseases are detected early enough.
Clinical laboratory science continues to change due to technology and new procedures that have made analyzing samples and recording them easier. People who want to work in a lab will work in a challenging environment that will enable them to have a serious impact on people’s lives.
