Online Degree Programs in Dental Hygiene
The role of a dental hygienist may vary depending on the dental office where they work. Most dental hygienists perform teeth cleanings, offer advice on how to take of teeth through brushing, flossing, seeing a dentist regularly, and by suggesting products that may help keep teeth more healthy between visits. But some dental hygienists will also assist the dentist in smaller procedures such as fillings, whitening, x-rays, and the application of braces. While dental hygienists will not perform the procedures, they will prepare the tools, and assist in handing tools to the dentist to make the procedure move along smoothly.
In order to become a dental hygienist, students will have to take science and math courses, communications courses, health courses, and dental hygiene courses. Some programs require students to complete an internship before they graduate. This will help make students more comfortable working with other people. Students will also learn how different tools are used and how to take x-rays correctly. Dental hygiene is very important because properly caring for ones teeth will mean fewer problems in the future. Dental hygienists are able to give advice on how to reduce the risk of gingivitis, plaque build-up, and other problems that people may have. Gum disease and other mouth diseases can be avoided if people take care of their teeth.
While dental assistants will not usually assist dentists during procedures, if an assistant is absent or only works part-time, then the dental hygienist will assist. In an effort to save money, many dentists will only hire one or two assistants depending on the size of their practice. One of these assistants usually has a degree in dental hygiene. Students who want to go into this career should also take courses in dental assisting so that they will be able to find work after graduation.
