Online Degree Programs in Forensics

Students completing a degree in forensics will be prepared to enter into the fascinating field of investigations. Forensics investigators may be called to the scene of a crime to look for clues and find evidence, or they may work in laboratories completing involved scientific studies of evidence. Forensics students will have experience in the classes to use real case studies and actual crime scene models to practice investigative skills and procedures. Students may focus on one area of forensic investigation such as arson, violent crime or even computer crimes.

Course work will provide students with theory and procedures for evidence collection and accurate recording for court testimony. Classes will also develop a complete understanding of court procedures, judicial processes, technical and scientific procedures as well as specialized training in DNA assessment and identification. There are also specializations in serology or the study of blood, toxicology or the study of poisons and toxins, as well as forensic chemistry and biology. Usually forensics will combine several of these skills in the same investigation, so a thorough understanding of many different aspects of forensics is important.

Graduates of a bachelor, master or PhD level educational program in forensics may be employed by coroner's offices, law enforcement agencies or even by private investigators or attorneys. Homeland security and other government agencies will also hire forensics professionals to assist in investigations and management positions in labs and investigative teams. While much of forensic investigation is based on both theory and practice, there is also an additional benefit for advancement if the candidate has a degree in the field. Online degrees in forensics make it easy for working professionals to complete their program of study without having to take time away from work to complete the program.
