Online Degree Programs in Gerontology
The study of gerontology is the study of how people age. This field is dedicated to figuring out ways to help people as they grow older. There are many changes that will occur including emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual as a person grows older. While some people may only experience small changes, others will experience dramatic ones. Gerontology studies why these changes occur and the reasons that may be behind them while also looking into ways that will improve health, physical and emotional well being, and intellect of those who are aging. Courses in the psychology of aging, physical therapy, gerontology management, nursing, and counseling are some that students will have to complete while earning their degree.
Once a student graduates, they will be able to find work in community and national research centers, nursing care facilities, universities, hospitals, and health care offices. By studying the causes of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia that elderly people can develop, students will discover how much genetics, personality, and personal health contribute to the development of these diseases. Learning how these diseases have developed may help researchers find treatments or cures through medications and other therapies. While they still have a long way to go, researchers have made some advances in slowing the affects of these diseases.
Gerontology does not only focus on finding cures for diseases, however. Students who want to become counselors instead of researchers will be able to help those who are aging come to terms with this and also help their families. Many people struggle to understand and accept that they are aging. This may limit what they can do during the day, which can lead to depression. Moving into a retirement community, where they will be monitored by the staff may be the answer. While this may also cause temporary depression, through counseling older people will begin to enjoy this new phase in their lives.
