The Associate of Science with a specialization as a surgical technologist allows students to learn specifically how to assist, prepare and work with surgical teams in hospitals, clinics and even physician’s offices. A surgical technologist has special training in surgical procedures and preparing the surgical room for the procedure. They may also assist the surgeon or surgical nurse or nurses while the operation is occurring.

Surgical technologists have more than just surgical training. They also must complete general medicine classes as well as courses on equipment and safety, emergency medicine, clinical medicine, medical terminology and general science courses. In addition surgical technologists work closely with the surgical team so effective communication skills and an ability to work under pressure is critical. Courses of study will include a practicum or internships to allow the student to implement the knowledge they have learned over the coursework.
