The role of the pharmacy technician is to assist the pharmacists in almost all aspects of working within a pharmacy. They may be required to talk to patients about medications, complete the compounding of medications, or support the pharmacist in managing and maintaining the equipment within the laboratory or pharmacy. Pharmacy technicians may work in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies in department stores or in private pharmacies. A pharmacy assistant will work directly under the supervision of the pharmacist.
A pharmacists technician completing an Associate of Science will be required to take various courses including laboratory or pharmacy equipment management, chemistry, both organic and inorganic, mathematics, biology and other medical courses. In addition they will have pharmacology classes as well as classes on ethic and legal issues with regards to medications and patient record keeping.
