Online Degree Programs in Physician Assistant
Physician assistant’s are needed in doctor’s offices to assist with procedures, finding charts, taking down personal information, and taking blood samples and other samples for analysis. These assistants help keep the office running smoothly by completing smaller tasks that would take up too much time if the doctor had to perform them. In order to become a physician assistant, one must complete the following courses: first aid, communications, medical coding and transcription, medical equipment, medical safety, drawing blood, and medical terminology.
Many times, physician assistants will help by answering phones, scheduling appointments, and answering patient questions. They will also complete patient charts and update them when necessary. Since files are kept in storage and in a computer system, assistants will have to be very accurate when keeping records. Physician assistants should be trained on database entry so that they will be able to complete patient charts easily.
Being able to talk to different people is another skill that physician assistants should have in order to work in a doctor’s office. Making patients feel comfortable, explaining procedures, and getting medical equipment ready are other tasks that physician assistants will complete during the day. Taking inventory of all medication will also be done by assistants. Organizational, communication, and an attention to detail are all skills that will be used in this position. Students will not have to complete an internship in order to earn their degree, but they should learn enough about the medical field to decide where they would like to work once they graduate. Hospitals, clinics, and rehabilitation centers need assistants to help with daily tasks and with patient care. Depending on which area an assistant wants to go into, they should be prepared to spend time answering patient questions, and calling pharmacies and health insurance companies in order to make sure patients are covered for their care expenses.
