The Associate of Science in medical assisting prepares graduates to work closely with physicians and nurses in direct patient care as well as record keeping and clerical aspects of healthcare. The program is both coursework as well as an internship that is completed at a local healthcare facility under supervision of an approved staff member. The course will teach students how to work with insurance claims, handle billing and patient records, provide basic healthcare and assist in surgical or clinical procedures as required.
Courses in the program include medical terminology, medical practices and procedures, legal and ethical issues in health care, billing, coding, insurance issues as well as basic laboratory work, x-rays and imaging and patient care. The patient care component will include procedures such as drawing blood, giving injections and handling non-invasive procedures under the supervision of nursing staff or physicians.
