Medical assistants provide support for both physicians and patients as well as working behind the scenes in laboratories, hospitals, clinics and doctor’s offices. Medical assistants often discuss basic health concerns with patients, preparing information for the doctor. They may also complete tests such as blood pressure and lung capacity, as well as taking histories, weighing patients, and keeping charts up to date and accurate. The medical assistant may also explain procedures and treatments to patients as well as complete follow-ups to ensure they are progressing appropriately.
A medical assistant will have most of the same basic training as a medical student. He or she will take courses in anatomy, biology, medical treatments, pharmaceuticals, diseases and disease control, as well as research and medical practices. He or she will also be aware of security, safety, legal and ethical issues in regards to working with clients and maintaining client records.
