The branch of health science which deals with radioactive energy and radioactive substances, using both non-ionizing and ionizing radiation to treat and diagnose disease is radiologic science. Sonographers and technologists are experts trained to perform medical procedures using radioisotopes, x-rays, sound waves and other complex imaging machinery. These tests show patients internal body parts on imaging monitors or x-ray film for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. Careers in radiologic science include cardiovascular interventional technology, radiography, computerized tomography, diagnostic medical sonography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, and magnetic resonance imaging.
The branch of medicine used to diagnose diseases, administer therapeutic treatments or study injuries, by creating images of a patient's internal organs, structure, and tissues is radiologic science. Anyone who has had a mammography performed, suffered a broken limb or twisted and ankle has probably been serviced by a radiologic science professional. In many instances diagnosing and treating a patient starts with reading and analyzing the radiologic science professional's images. Called radiology before 1972 it focused on the circulatory system, digestive tract and skeletal system. In the 1980's, radiologic science technologies improved greatly, which let numerous areas branch into their own specialties. These specialties are covered in coursework as students advanced through the training programs.
Radiologic science professionals normally work directly with doctors, nurses and other medical team members. They not only perform the imaging but also choose the most useful and best images, analyzing these for the patients other medical team members. Although physicians head up the care team for their patient and radiologic science professionals strictly adhere to their regulations and guidelines, their input is often invaluable. Most radiologic science professionals work in a hospital setting but more are choosing to work in outpatient care centers, diagnostic imaging centers, mobile units, and medical facilities.
