Social workers in the public health and medical social work field help clients deal with moderate, severe or terminal illness and diseases such as cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's and heart disease. They work with caregivers, family members, friends as well as the patient affected by the illness or disease. They offer advice, counsel clients and help coordinate the healthcare services required at home. Social workers are an important part of the patient's treatment team as well as working with mental health agencies or case management for individuals.
