Online Degree Programs in Corrections

A program in corrections will provide students with the basic training and safety knowledge required for a job in parole, probation or as a corrections officer. The courses within the programs are designed with safety in mind both for the students as well as for the people that they will be working with in the prison system. Coursework will include training in suicide risk assessment, monitoring and supervision of high-level inmates, procedural practices for safety, mental health issues for inmates, emergency medical awareness as well as firearms and effective restrain and emergency situational controls.

Students will be encourage to learn about the various types of communication strategies that can be used to control potentially dangerous situations in prisons and other short term holding facilities. The courses will encourage graduates to consider all aspects of their actions, not just the actual event, but also the implications of the situation. Most of the classes will be taught by experienced law enforcement and corrections officers so will be very practical and based on the reality of working within the prison system. Most corrections programs will also provide a practical component working in a working prison or correction facility, usually with an assigned mentor or senior officer.

The courses in corrections will also provide specialized training in recognition of hazardous materials, drugs and gangs and gang symbols. Legal and ethical issues for those working in prisons are also addressed during the programs, with an emphasis on proactive management of potentially challenging situations. The courses usually involve roleplays and practice scenarios that can be related to real world situations that graduates will be prepared to handle. Since graduates will be consider peace officers they will also be trained to understand the duties and responsibilities that go with the position both within and outside of the prison system and prison facilities.
