Online Degree Programs in Crime Scene Technology and Investigation

Programs of study in crime scene technology and investigation can be completed either in traditional lecture style studies or in online courses offered at the learner's convenience. The courses are designed to have students actually look at and understand what they are viewing at a crime scene and how to make appropriate hypothesis, tests and procedures to collect evidence for criminal proceedings. This is a very popular career that has become more popular through the use of civilian examiners and crime scene technologists working within law enforcement agencies across the country.

In addition to just evaluating and examining the crime scene the programs will teach students how to properly gather and store evidence, maintain chains of custody, and followed appropriate protocols for handling all evidence gathered. Students completing the program will also understand the scientific processes used in analyzing and testing evidence, as well as what tests are not appropriate or useful in a court of law. The students will have experience on how to present information to a jury and how to testify in a court of law. Many of the classes will deal with mock-ups of crime scenes and scenarios to allow students to have practical experience on exact replicas of crime scenes.

Graduates of crime scene and technology programs will be able to work for public or private investigation programs, including police departments and government agencies. Some crime scene technologists and investigators may specialize in various types of crimes including violent crimes, crimes involving technology, or even property crimes. This specialization is usually completed after the general program, and can also be developed while working in the field. Crime scene technologists must also have good knowledge of legal processes and procedures and must have an ability to work well in teams with various other professionals.
