Programs of study in crime scene technology and investigation can be completed either in traditional lecture style studies or in online courses offered at the learner's convenience. The courses are designed to have students actually look at and understand what they are viewing at a crime scene and how to make appropriate hypothesis, tests and procedures to collect evidence for criminal proceedings. In addition to just evaluating and examining the crime scene the programs will teach students how to properly gather and store evidence, maintain chains of custody, and followed appropriate protocols for handling all evidence gathered. Some crime scene technologists and investigators may specialize in various types of crimes including violent crimes, crimes involving technology, or even property crimes. This specialization is usually completed after the general program, and can also be developed while working in the field. Crime scene technologists must also have good knowledge of legal processes and procedures and must have an ability to work well in teams with various other professionals.
