Online Degree Programs in Biology
Biology is literally the study of life in all its many forms from the tiniest of organisms on through to the ecology of the planet. Biologists study various aspects of organisms and research and develop policies and procedures to enhance all aspects of life. Biologists attempt to discover and understand the classification and determination of various organisms and how they interact with the rest of the ecosystem and ultimately the environment. Biologists may work in laboratories on controlled research projects or they may work within the field completing real world experiments and monitoring the environment. Depending on the type of biology the student elects to focus on courses of study will include statistics, research, chemistry, biology, math and ecology.
There are several major divisions in the study of biology. Programs that focus on the study of plants are considered to fall under the category of botany, those that focus on animals are zoology course, and the study of microscopic life is microbiology. These groups can then further be divided into smaller groups including molecular biology, cellular biology, physiology and ecology. Ecology is often seen as a separate aspect of biology, allowing students to research how all aspects of organisms from the very small to very large interact with each other.
Graduates of biology degrees at the Associate, Bachelor, Master or Doctorate level can find employment in government agencies, medical research facilities, environmental groups and agencies or even private companies. Most biologists will be qualified for mid to upper level positions within agencies with a Bachelor's or above level of education. Some biology students may also work for zoos, aquariums and horticultural centers. Biologists may be employed as researchers, program or project managers or as consultants to developments and environmental projects.
