Online Degree Programs in Environmental Science

Analyzing data, gathering samples, and projecting the impact on the environment that companies and government projects will make are just some of the job responsibilities that those in environmental management oversee each year. In an effort to protect the environment, which includes land, water, animal and plant life, corporations hire those who have degrees in environmental management to perform tests and look at past data to see how much it would cost the corporation to institute environmental safety plans, clean-up costs in case of an industrial accident, or how much it will cost the environment in damaged vegetation, loss of land, and the impact on wildlife. There are also government agencies that monitor corporations and small businesses as well.

In order to work in environmental management, students will have to complete courses in math, science, interpersonal communications, land preservation, and environmental policy. They will have to learn how to read spreadsheets, conduct water and soil tests, and report these results in papers that are easy to read and understand. All work must be documented so that it can be reviewed and studied in later projects. Many times, corporations that feel they would spend too much money in safety or disaster costs will look elsewhere when building a plant or factory. While this many mean fewer jobs in certain areas, environmental needs come first. In many instances, smaller companies will build plants and factories because it will cost them less to protect the environment. These smaller businesses are also able to integrate environmental practices which include using alternate power sources, and recycling.

Students who want to work in environmental management will also have to learn about current environmental policies and how to create new ones. Some students eventually earn degrees in environmental law. This is a fascinating field that uses both environmental management skills and current law to pass new laws that will protect the environment.
