Online Degree Programs in Fire Science

Firefighters, fire prevention specialists and those that may be involved in management of fire scenes and investigations often find a degree in fire science to be a key step in preparing for advanced investigation and management positions within their organizations. A fire science degree gives students the opportunity to discuss and plan how to handle all types of natural and man-made disasters and events that may or may not include the management of fires or the potential for fires. Issues such as chemical spills, hazardous waste leaks, earthquakes, emergency management and aircraft accidents or high rise apartment or building fires and catastrophes are all addressed during the training.

Classes are usually taught by experienced firefighter and investigators that focus on both the emergency aspects of the actual disasters plus the prevention and proactive measures that can be taken in businesses, agencies and communities to prevent the possibility of these type of disasters. In addition fire science programs can also set the groundwork for those interested in becoming arson investigators or safety personnel for companies, governments or private sector industries. Advanced planning as well as how to establish and develop protocols for first responders in fire and emergency situations will be address throughout the program.

Courses in chemistry, fire management, legal issues, building codes and government regulations are usually considered part of the core of the fire science courses. Classes will also cover the use of technology in fire science, safety and prevention and give workers hands on experience in using this technology. Classes in fire safety may be completed in traditional university settings or may also be done over the internet. Internet courses provide the opportunities for those students that are already working to complete degree programs without having to take time off of work.
