Online Degree Programs in GIS

A program of study in GIS or geographic information systems will prepare students with the skills needed to record, analyze, manipulated and display all different forms of geographical information. GIS professionals may be employed by governmental or private sector businesses including computer companies, research agencies, as well as other geographic referencing companies. GIS professionals are often in very high demand in mining and oilfield production companies as well as the corresponding governmental agencies that monitor these companies. Some companies also use GIS professionals to decide where to locate offices and businesses, as well as mapping and designing housing developments, cities and even transportation routes.

Courses of study in a GIS program include computer studies in both software and databases, as much of the GIS information is actually stored and managed in the form of databases, rather than as maps. Programs can be designed for degree and certificate levels as well as specialized training for software applications. The classes can be completed in traditional lecture style programs or can be done online or a combination of both. Coursework also involved cartography, or the study of mapmaking, mathematics courses, software courses, database management and design as well as verification, geography and specific computer program courses.

The United States Department of Labor indicates that careers in geographic information systems will be some of the fastest growing in the cartography and geography areas. Since the programs are designed to be very practical and hands on students can often start working prior to completing their full degree or certification, giving both real world issues to explore as well as gaining valuable work experience. The demand for GIS professionals in government agencies and private sector companies will continue to rise for the next several years, making this field an excellent career choice.
