Online Degree Programs in Social Science

Social science, often called social sciences, are branches of study that deal with human society, socio-cultural aspects, the social relations of human behavior and individual relationships to and in society. It is a scientific or scholarly discipline, which normally includes social psychology, cultural anthropology, criminology, economics, sociology, and political science. For undecided students, a social science degree allows them to gain skills and broad experience, which transfers easily to any of these disciplines or career concentrations. A social scientist studies numerous facets of human and social relationships. They use this research to measure any dynamic changes and support, and strengthen government social programs and business efforts.

In social science, research plays a major role, with social scientists using an assortment of methods to gather facts and build theories. The information produced from applied research helps people make decisions that are more effective or manage their affairs in a more effective manner. There are many ways of collecting information such as preparing and translating computer graphics and maps; questionnaires and interviewing people to gather opinion and demographic data; experimenting with animal or human subjects in a lab; working and living amidst the study subjects; analyzing historical documents and records and doing field investigations. Although social science specialties vary, the research and work often overlaps with other disciplines.

With a social science degree many social scientists work for a variety of employers as researchers, counselors and administrators or for local, state or federal governments. Other employers include technical, scientific and management consulting services, engineering and architectural firms, scientific development and research services, and organizations such as professional, political, business and labor. Many people with social science discipline teach in schools, colleges and universities. Advanced degree holders may also teach internationally or participate in global research projects.
