Online Degree Programs in Human Services
A career in human services provides a rewarding opportunity for those that enjoy working with people to improve or enhance their lives. The focus of human service programs is to allow students to learn the skills needed to help clients in accessing programs and services that will make their lives better. Human service programs can offer any number of specialized courses and may be at any level from associates to doctoral levels. Programs are geared for students to gain both practical experience in clinical or community settings as well as give a strong theoretical background.
Courses in human services programs may include counseling, criminal justice, health care and health care administration, management and administration with non-profit agencies. Courses may also specialize in various types of counseling including adult and child counseling, marriage and family counseling and working with groups in training and support services. Human service programs often focus on working either directly with clients or on the management issues of administrating non-profit or community-based services. Topics included in courses will include interdisciplinary teams, treatment teams, and working collaboratively between agencies. Communication skills are also stressed throughout training as this is a major component of a human service professionals career.
A graduate of a human service program can expect to find employment in many different community, state and federal agencies. Human service graduates may work with child or adult protective services, domestic violence shelters or counseling programs, rehabilitation centers, school systems, hospitals or any other community based agency. Courses usually involve a practical experience aspect in which students are provided the opportunity to work in the community in a variety of different workplaces and work experiences. At each work experience or practicum students will be able to apply the theoretical knowledge that they have learned in the individual classes to understand how community services can work for clients.
