Online Degree Programs in Information Science
Computer technology has changed the way that people communicate, conduct business, and find what they are looking for. There are many components that go into finding and retrieving information from the internet and online databases. Entering information, cataloging information, and making it easy for people to find and use this information has changed that way that people look at computer technology. Millions of pages are added to the internet each year that give people the information they are looking for. Search engines have made research on the internet a little easier, but more needs to be done. Creating databases and search engines is the job of computer programmers and network engineers.
Information science courses include information technology, internet security, policies and procedures, and computer science. These courses will teach students how computers were created, how different parts work together with networks, how to store and retrieve data through software programs, and the laws that govern the sharing of information on the internet and in company databases. Students will be able to use this knowledge to create network storage programs for company archives and shared networks, search engines that make searching the internet faster, and how to protect databases from being used by those who are not authorized.
The sharing of information on the internet is protected by laws that prohibit the use of information that is considered private. Once information has been published, it is the property of whoever is publishing it. Stealing content, graphics, and other information and using in on other web sites or in other ways is punishable by law. Being able to detect pirated content through the use of computer software has allowed those who maintain databases and web sites to verify that the content they are receiving is unique and original. Protecting databases from lawsuits is another job of information technology departments and small company that purchase content to use on their web sites.
